*The Huggy Bear, a petpet that is a combination of the Huggy and the Cool Purple Teddy Bear, references the character Huggy Bear from the television show ''[[Starsky and Hutch]]''.

*Rock, a Pet, was originally called [[Pet Rock]], a reference to the 1970s fad , where ordinary gray pebbles from a builder's supply store were marketed as if they were live pets.  The new name "Rock" has has seen a significant Neopoint price increase for this pet, perhaps because of the new name's closer connections with several popular interests: [[Rock and roll|Rock Music]], [[The Rock (entertainer)|wrestler/actor The Rock]], and [[Saint Peter]].
*Shark Sandwich is a reference to an album by [[Spinal Tap]].
*The description of Metallic Sun Staff (Unleash the power of the sun with this magical staff!) is a reference to the slogan of the drink [[Sunny Delight]].
*The description of the Intergalactic Ice Cream Cone is "Sold as the Ice Cream of the Future!", the [[Dippin' Dots]] slogan.
*The description for Pumpkin Cookies notes that they have a crunchy frog interior, a reference to Monty Python's Whizzo Chocolates sketch.
*The Amulet of Inevitable Betrayal is a reference to Wash the pilot's monologue in [[Joss Whedon]]'s television series [[Firefly (television series)|Firefly]]. In this monologue are the phrases "Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!" and "Its laugh is an evil laugh!", which incidentally is the item description.

===NeoQuest II===
*The figure shown on the Neoquest page is dressed like Willy Wonka, and the one for Neoquest II resembles the[[Architect (Matrix character)| Architect]].  Neoquest 2 takes place in a simulator, which may be construed as a similar to the "Matrix".
*The slogan of NQII, "Live in your world, Get eaten by a vampire bearog in mine", is similar to the [[PlayStation 2]] slogan "Live in your world, play in ours". Furthermore, there is no actual Vampire Bearog that has yet been found.
*Neoquest II has some interesting "features," and its creator has said that the four main characters are named after characters on the [[Everquest]] test server.
*Neoquest II also features the "Lost City" of Phorofor (or 404).
*The passphrase for the Lost City of Phorofor is "ad ro un ta en" which is made up with syllables of "En taro adun!", from the protoss race from [[Starcraft]].
*Chia Oscuro, a city in Terror Mountain of NQII, is spelled like [[chiaroscuro]], a technique of using light and dark in a work of art. Alternatively, in [[The Tale of Despereaux]], a rather lonely rat is named Chiaroscuro.
*The final boss of Terror Mountain, Scuzzy, is the widest-spread pronunciation of [[SCSI]] (Small Computer System Interface).
*Selasa's words "I fell victim to one of the classic blunders, right after the ones about land wars in Tyrannia and going in against Skeiths when death is on the line--never buy land in the desert." are a reference to Vizzini's dialog in ''[[The Princess Bride]]'': "You fell victim to one of the classic blunders. The most famous is: 'Never get involved in a land war in Asia.' But, only slightly less well known is this: 'Never go in against a Sicilian, when death is on the line!'"
*Vilaria, a dark faerie in Neoquest II, says that she's not evil, but more chaotic neutral. This references the alignment system in [[Dungeons and Dragons]] which contains a chaotic/lawful alignment as well as a good/evil alignment. It is also similar to the alignment from ADOM (Ancient Domains of Mystery), in where you can be NC (Neutral-Chaotic).
*Terask, the final boss of NQII, is spelled similar to [[Tarasque|Tarrasque]], [http://www.planetadnd.com/interactive_books/mm00281.php], a powerful creature in [[Dungeons & Dragons]], or Torrasque, a powerful Ultralisk from Starcraft.
*In the last [[Cut scene|cutscene]] of NQII, the crews' uniforms bear a very striking resemblance to the ones from the original ''[[Star Trek]]''.

*One of the phrases that randomly pops up during the game Kiss the Mortog is "Ahh, [[Sonny and Cher]], my prize Mortogs!" This is a reference to the BBC comedy series ''[[The League of Gentlemen (comedy)|The League Of Gentlemen]]''. 
*The name of the flash game "Grand Theft Ummagine" is an obvious reference to the [[Grand Theft Auto (series)|Grand Theft Auto]] series.
*One of the random phrases uttered by the shopkeeper in Cheeseroller is "I think it's a bit runnier than you'll like it, sir" &mdash; a line from the [[Monty Python]] cheese shop sketch.
*The Quiggle that runs Neopian Adventure Generator will randomly say "Bring me a shrubbery", a reference to ''[[Monty Python and the Holy Grail]]''.
*At Coltzan's Shrine, your Neopet may randomly say "And to think, Malkus Vile would have got away with it if it wasn't for us pesky Neopets!", a reference to [[Scooby Doo]].
*At Coltzan's Shrine, one of the quips the game may give when no prizes are being awarded is "Your hands begin to glow blue."  This phrase comes from an early 1980s computer game called [[Hack (computer game)|Hack]], where the phrase is shown when your character reads a scroll of Confuse Monster. 
*In the game "Kiss the Mortog" in Meridell, a lost game results in the message "Game over man... game over," a reference to the movie [[Aliens (1986 film)|Aliens]].
*Many of the games are versions of classic games such as Neggsweeper ([[Minesweeper (computer game)|Minesweeper]]), Snow Wars ([[Battleship (game)|Battleship]]), Korbat's Lab ([[Breakout]]) and Flycatcher ([[Millipede (game)|Millipede]]).
*Another one of the games is Plushie Tycoon is which your job is to make and sell plushies, clearly Neopets version of the popular Tycoon games.
*Yet another [[All Your Base]] reference is a Kougra shopkeeper designed to look like CATS, the villain of Zero Wing. The original appearance of the character on the New Features page was accompanied by the caption, "All your Neopet are belong to us!"
*When one goes to the Neopian Lottery, the picture that rolls the balls around says "Machine Name:  Arthur", etc.   This references the British lottery system where the various lottery machines have names like Arthur and Guinevere.
*In "Whack-A-Staff-Member" the male staff member with black hair, black t-shirt and black sunglasses frequently says "SMEG" when hit. This is a quote from the British sci-fi comedy ''[[Red Dwarf]]'', where it is frequently muttered by Lister when angry.
*The game Jolly Jugglers is similar to [[Tumblepop]]
*Whie playing the game Shapeshifter Sinsi will say 
'What do you get if you guzzle on sweets... eating as much as an elephant eats...'
== Trading Card Game ==
*The flavour text on the Oubliette card contains a quote from ''Labyrinth'': "It's a place where you put people to forget about them."
*The art on the "Fire and Ice Blade" card imitates that of the "Sword of Fire and Ice" card from [[Magic: The Gathering]].
*The art of "Rainbow Pteri" from the Mystery Island Neopets TCG expansion mirrors the famous "Birds of Paradise" from the Magic: The Gathering TCG.
*The flavour text on the "Armoury of Kass" is "We need swords. Lots of swords." This is a reference to a line from [[The Matrix]].
*References to [[The Phantom of the Opera]] are clearly evident in the collectable cards "The Phantom" and "Riyella", which are clearly versions of Erik (The Phantom of the Opera), and Christine Daaé. Riyella's description refers to her as "the Phantom's true love". *The flavour text on the "Tagobo Potion" card is "DRINK ME", a reference to Alice in Wonderland.

*In the Gallery of Evil, the creature on the book has a [[Pikachu]] in its mouth.
*The "YOUR LUPE A SPLODE" avatar references the [[Homestar Runner]] quote "YOUR HEAD A SPLODE," as does the Neopets Team's "TNT ... A SPLODE" avatar. Another avatar, in which a [[Halloween]] Cybunny is "Garlic'D," references [[Teen Girl Squad]].
*Neopets has a number of references to the [[1967]] [[United Kingdom|UK]] [[television series]] ''[[The Prisoner]]'', such as prisoner number five in the game "Cellblock" being named "Number Five" (a reference to [[Patrick McGoohan]]'s character "[[Number Six|Number 6]]"). In fact, Neopets co-creater [[Adam Powell]] uses the name "Number Six" when participating in staff competitions, and the Number Six Plushie, a formerly rare item that was made available during the month of Celebrating (December) to all Neopians, seems to be modeled visually after him. There is also an avatar one can obtain of him.
*The game includes a species of dragon called "Scorchio", a popular catchphrase from the [[BBC]]'s comedy ''[[The Fast Show#Mixed performances|The Fast Show]]''.

*The "Rebuild Maraqua" animation in the [[2004|Year 6]] Advent Calendar features various Neopian bands playing a charity single similar to [[Band Aid (band)|Band Aid's]] "[[Do They Know It's Christmas?]]"
*Bands playing at the Tyrannian Concert Hall include M*YNCI (a boy band, a la [[*NSYNC]]), Blue Kacheek Group ([[Blue Man Group]]), Sticks N' Stones ([[Guns N' Roses]]), Chomby and the Fungus Balls ([[Josie and the Pussycats]]).
*The Neotitle that reads, "No soup for you!" is a reference to the [[Seinfeld]] episode in which the soup Nazi tells Elaine, "No soup for you!"
*The Neopets Team's spelling of duh (D'oh!) comes from [[The Simpsons]].
*On the [http://www.neopets.com/aboutus.phtml About Us] page, under the Content staff, there is an entry saying "Keith (he's mental)". This is a reference to [[The Office]] where David Brent is showing a temp worker the staff in Wernham Hogg.
*When [[Richard Whiteley]], former presenter of [[Countdown (game show)|Countdown]], died, the Lenny Conundrum game featured a Countdown Conundrum-style puzzle, a mention of Whiteley, and a Chia dressed up to look like him.
*The Neopet Usul is named after a character in the "[[Dune]]" novel by [[Frank Herbert]]
*Sometimes when you visit the scratchcard kiosk in the deserted fairground, Sidney will say "Do you want to buy some pegs Dave?" This is a mixture of a catchphrase and another quote from a character called Papa Lazarou from [[The League of Gentlemen (comedy)]], to whom Sidney bears a slight resemblance.
*The company profile for Lupe Consolidated names its CEO as Lupert Murdoch, owner of Neocorp.  This is a reference to [[Rupert Murdoch]], CEO of [[News Corp]].
*On Battle Faerie Day, one of the captions reads 'Pit your Scarblade or Kass Action Figures against this new Battle Figure Action Figure in a duel to the PAIN', a reference to ''[[The Princess Bride]]''.
*The quote in the 220th Neopian Times Editorial is "Finally... this trophy can fulfill its density, destiny". This is a quote from ''[[Back to the Future]]''.
*The slogan of the robot petpet shop is "It's your metal pal who's fun to be with!" a reference to the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation from ''[[The Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy]]'', who define a robot as "Your plastic pal who's fun to be with".
* The pet name Wocky comes from the poem ''[[Jabberwocky]]'' by [[Lewis Carroll]], as does the pet named "Jubjub" which is mentioned in the poem, too.
* Adam, one of the creators of Neopets, used to have the quote "I'm scared of mice and spiders, but oh-so-much greater is my fear that one day the two species will cross-breed to form an all-powerful race of mice-spiders who will immobilize human beings in giant webs in order to steal cheese" on his user lookup (his username is borovan) but it was recently removed. The quote comes from ''[[Spaced]]'', an English sitcom that was written by, and starred, [[Simon Pegg]] and [[Jessica Stevenson]].
* There are Kadoaties in the Kadoatery called Q, Riker and Picard, a reference to [[Star Trek]].
* Also in the Kadoatery are Kadoaties named Fry, Bender and Leela, all references to [[Futurama]].
* In the news on 1-10-06 for the announcement of the Island Tuskaninny, it says:
"Good Gift: Island Paint Brush for your Tuskaninny on your Mystery Island vacation.
Bad Gift: Island Paint Brush for your Tuskaninny on your Terror Mountain vacation."  This is a reference to the short "Good Idea, Bad Idea" in Animaniacs.
*A shop blog portrays a pirate-like Blumaroo with the name of Orlando Blumaroo, a reference to Orlando Bloom in the move "Pirates of the Carribbean".
*In the game ''The return of the Return of Dr. Sloth'', the rank "Cosmic Delivery Boy" is a reference to Fry's job in [[Futurama]]
*The [[List of Neopets#Mynci|Mynci]]'s default petpage shows a piece of the chorus from ''Burn in Hell'', a [[Twisted Sister]] song.
