Tyrell McCrea is a former linebacker for Angelo State University who went on to play professionally in the Arena Football League.

Youth and high school
Tyrell McCrea, raised in Del Rio Texas, spent his early childhood playing football and baseball. As a child, McCrea and his older brother, Frenchey Jr., would practice against each other in the parks and streets of Del Rio. He played in the city leagues but was unable to partipate in football his 7th and 8th grade season because he attended a private school. He began to blossom into a special player while attending Del Rio High School. McCrea became a key player on offense as a senior at Del Rio despite being hampered by ankle injuries that season. He was rated one of the top 50 fullbacks in the state of Texas, All-Southwest Texas Running Back, and All-District 27-5A RB. His break out performance was in the first game of his senior year against Odessa Permian with a 80 plus yard touchdown run. He finished the game with over 100 yards rushing and 45 yards receiving, plus a TD. He was also the homecoming prince and an honor roll student with a 3.8 grade point average.

College
McCrea was a star linebacker at Angelo State, where he was known for being a true leader. He started 4 seasons after taking a redshirt his first year on campus.

Although starting four seasons, he finished his college career in style by being named All-Lone Star Conference his senior year. He also helped ASU baseball team to a NCAA Division II World Series berth in baseball.

His first career start, he tallied 20 tackles (9 solo) and a quarterback sack against East Central Oklahoma University. His best overall season was his senior year, when he finished second on the team in total tackles with 78, finished the season with 24 solo tackles, 54 assisted tackles, 6 tackles for loss, 2 sacks and a forced fumble, and ranked 10th in the conference for tackles per game with 7.8.

McCrea attended Texas Tech's NFL Pro Day in the spring of 2007. He graduated with a Bachelors in Fine Arts.

Professional career
AFL
McCrea was signed as a free agent by the Corpus Christi Sharks of the af2 to play fullback and linebacker in June 2007. He spent a week with the Austin Wranglers of the AFL prior. He started the last five games of the season and earned Defensive Player of the game twice. He should have earned league honors for his performance against the Texas Copperheads with 4 tackles, sack, and a forced fumble for a 40 yard touchdown. In November 2007, he signed to play with the Sharks for another season. He started the Sharks first 7 games of the 2008 season but his season was cut short with season ending surgery. He finished with 13.5 tackles, to go along with two sacks.

In April 2011, McCrea signed with the New Orleans Voodoo of the Arena Football League. He is currently on the roster.
