Established in Sinaloa, northern [[Mexico]], in the late [[1960s]], banda music exploded in popularity in the late [[1990s]] throughout Mexico and in the southwest [[United States]], primarily in [[Texas]] and [[California]] but also in [[Iowa]], [[Kansas]], and [[Illinois]]. Thanks to the rapidly rising popularity of [[La Banda Sinaloense]], the genre has taken on a different role.
