Revision 55531969 of "User talk:Alerante/Point system" on enwiki

Some parts of this seem to go against the nature of Wikipedia, imo. Not being able to create new main namespace pages until you have recognition stops someone new from coming along and creating a fantastic new article - they have to edit other articles and draw attention to themselves. The proposal has merit but I think there are problems associating a user popularity rank with their permissions. violet/riga (t) 22:31, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)

:The point levels are just there as an idea. I personally think that the scale (as well as the entire proposal, it could be said) is very rough around the edges, and it serves as just an example of what could be done with this. If the base point level should include more permissions than these (and they probably do), then you can draft another system. If you dislike this altogether (see below), then I will take your comments into consideration and modify or scrap the thing outright. <small>[ alerante | &#x201c;&#x201d; 20:14, 23 Sep 2004 (UTC) ]</small>

Bad idea, it's as gameable as Slashdot's karma points. Tying privileges to it would increase the justification to try to exploit the system. -- Cyrius|&#9998; 01:47, 23 Sep 2004 (UTC)

I second Cyrius's remarks, once you create a point system you don't have an encyclopedia, you have an encyclopedia game. It changes the focus in a way that at first seems neutral, but in fact is the opposite. People become concerned about points as the primary goal, when article quality should be the goal. - [[User:Cohesion|cohesion &#9742;]] 06:32, Sep 23, 2004 (UTC)

It is well worth reading Alfie Kohn's book 'Punished by Rewards' before contemplating point based systems for organizing social systems. http://www.thewellspring.com/Cat/Adult_books/punished.html
However, if you want to experiment with point-ish systems and Wikipedia, be sure to check out the WikiMoney area. Bit different concept, but seems like a fun experiment. Bryce 06:37, 23 Sep 2004 (UTC)

I think it goes against the wiki philosophy, in that everyone is equal (but sysops are more equal than some :P). New users should not be stopped from being able to create and edit in the same way as any other user. I don't think vandalism is such an uncontrollable problem that a system such as this is needed. Interesting ideas, but not a lot that is new. I have some other possible objections. Should I add them to the section? Andrewa 18:18, 23 Sep 2004 (UTC)

:Go ahead, it's just a proposal, if you have anything to add, just go ahead.

:<strike>EDIT: Please sign the additions too.</strike> <small>[ alerante | &#x201c;&#x201d; 19:56, 23 Sep 2004 (UTC) ]</small>

::Hmmmm? I'll have to think about this. Normally in document mode we don't sign edits, we leave that to the history, while in thread mode we do. But it's your user space! Andrewa 10:25, 24 Sep 2004 (UTC)

:::Ah ... I see. It feels like a discussion, but I see your point. We'll leave it to the history then. <small>[ alerante | &#x201c;&#x201d; 20:52, 24 Sep 2004 (UTC) ]</small>
