Electromagnetic thruster based on loss of linear momentum is the name of a device capable to move its center of mass without expelling propellant and without applying external force. It was theoretically proposed, experimentally measured and published by Dimitri S.H. Charrier in two successive articles in peer-reviewed journals. The first article gave the theoretical concept of electromagnetic thruster and some elements for performing experiments.<ref name="Progress In Electromagnetics Research M">{{cite news|title=Loss of linear momentum in an electrodynamics system: from an analytical approach to simulations|date=2010|author=Dimitri S.H. == Principle of operation ==
In classical electromagnetism, a coil made of conductive wire creates a repulsive force on a coaxial disc (or ring) on a short period of time when a transient current is applied, as for an electro-mechanical linear actuator. This famous physics experiment is used in the electromagnetic thruster where series of current impulse at high frequency is applied. It was experimentally observed that the center of mass of rigidly attached coil and disc moves in one direction.
The explanation of linear momentum loss stands in asymmetrical geometry of device, in thermal dissipation occurring in the disc and in properties of retarded potential.
