'''WikiTree''' (initiated on [[April 26]] [[2005]]) is a project running on the [[MediaWiki]] platform that aims to bring together basic personal profiles of all individuals who live or ever lived on this planet, and automatically construct bloodline trees of families that gradually start forming a global ''family forest of humanity''. 

Many persons perform excellent genealogical research (or hire professionals that comb archives and databases for them) and put a lot of effort in constructing their own family trees. However, all such trees, sophisticated as they may be, are for the most part ''growing in isolation''.

Very little information needs to be entered about any person to get started - just the name, date of birth, date of death (if deceased) and children's names.

One of the goals is the ability to visualize any part of the global family tree (patrilineal, matrilineal, in a given period, etc.)

The WikiTree project follows the rules of a totally transparent community development very similar to the one behind [[Wikipedia]] (free editing and viewing, respect for and appreciation of differing opinions, languages and cultures).

==Slowness==

WikiTree is currently not hosted by the [[Wikimedia Foundation]]. Instead, it is hosted on private servers.  The service can run quite slowly, with the home page taking up to a minute to load. In addition, when a large family tree is involved, there can be delays of many seconds between page loads as the family tree graphs within the articles are constructed.

WikiTree made the front page of [[Digg]] on [[March 06]] [[2006]] and its servers appear to have gone down in response to the flood of traffic (see the [[Digg Effect]]). The server has been subsequently upgraded.
