== His Philosophy ==

Ramanuja espoused a philosophy known in [[Sanskrit]] as [[Visistadvaita]] in which the fundamental reality ([[tattva]]) is that individual souls and matter are inseparable attributes of the one substance i.e. [[Brahman]] and the goal of life ([[purushartha]]) is to attain [[moksha]] -- a state of bliss as in an unending and unbroken devotion between the individual soul and [[Brahman]] i.e. between the substance and attribute without the interference of [[karma]] which causes souls to go through the cycle of births of deaths. The means ([[hita]]) to achieve this state of bliss is through the path of devotion ([[bhakti-yoga]]) or through complete surrender ([[prapatti]]). 

== His Life ==

Sri Ramanuja was born to Kesava Perumal Somayaji Dikhsitar and Kanthimathi Ammal at [[Sriperumbudur]], in present day [[Tamil Nadu]], [[India]].  

His date of birth is placed differently by different authorities. One account, in a handwritten manuscript, notes that he  was born in [[Kaliyuga]] year 4119 which in the English Calendar corresponds to [[1017]] CE and places the  exact date as 13th April [[1017]] CE.

While still a boy, he lost his father and was living with his mother at [[Kanchipuram]] under the protection of Tiruk kachi Nambi. 

By the age of 16 he had mastered all the [[Veda]]s and [[Sastra]]s.  At age  17, he married Rakshakaambaal ( Tanjammal, in [[Tamil]])

Sri Ramanuja was placed under Yadava Prakasa an Advaitic [[Sannyasi]] and [[Saivaite]] [[Guru]], at Tirupput kuzhi for training. Their relationship provides an insight into his considerable intellectual prowess.

:There were numerous occasions when the two clashed when Sri Ramanuja pointed  out the errors in the Guru's interpretations and corrected him. This enraged the Guru who plotted to kill him, but Ramanuja learned of the plot and escaped. In his later years Yadava Prakasa converted to Sri Ramanuja's way of thinking and became a follower.

In the traditional lineage of [[Acharya]]s, Sri Ramanuja follows his  great grandfather [[Yamunacharya]] aka [[Alavandar]] who follows his grand-father [[Natha Muni]] who received the 4000 Sacred Hymns ([[Naalayira Dhivya Prabhandam]]) from [[NammAlwar]] one of the 12 [[Alwar]]s. 

During Alavandar's funeral Sri Ramanuja promised that he would
#Write a commentary on [[Veda VyAsa]]'s [[Vedanta Sutra]]  
#Write a commentary and propogate [[NammAlwar]]'s [[ThiruvAimozhi]]
#Perpetuate the memory of Vyasa and Parasara
all of which he fulfilled and more.

Sri Ramanuja's  wife did not understood  either his greatness nor appreciated his catholicity and when Ramanuja was around 30 they separated and Ramanuja took [[Sannyas]] with the  name of 'Ramanuja Muni'. He is also referred to as Yati Rajar - a title of honor meaning King of Sannyasis.

He took over as the [[Acharya]] at [[Srirangam]],after the following episode, which provides an indication into his catholicity.
:Rmanuja wanted to learn the secrets of the three great [[Mantra]]s from " Tiruk Koshtiyur Nambi". After several visits Ramanuja was given the secrets on the condition that he did not reveal it. On learning the secrets however, Ramanuja freely distributed this knowledge.

Ramanuja nominated 74 Acharyas to succeed him and lived to the age of 120. His physical body is preserved till this day in a sitting posture in the [[Srirangam]] temple.

== His works ==

Of the nine works written by Sri Ramanuja the three most important are
#Sri Bhasya - his magnum opus which is a commentary on Veda VyAsa's [[Vedanta Sutra]]s. His commentary (Bhasya) is referred to with the title [[Sri]] because of its quality and clarity.
#Gita Bhasya - his commentary on the [[Bhagavad Gita]] which outlines the paths of karma, jnAna and bhakti.
#Vedartha Sangraha - which provides a total vison of the [[Upanishad]]s in a relevant and coherent manner, taking in effect the place of a commentary to the Upanisads.

This is my first stab at a set of conventions for writing 
wikipedia entries which of neccessity requires a lot of Sanskrit 
and other languages, notably Tamil.

===Readability===
The general attempt is to use English wherever appropriate
and Sanskrit only when necessary.

Where the english meaning is wordier and subject to interpretation
the sanskrit equivalent is placed in brackets
i.e. purpose of life (purusartha)

===Various spellings of Sanskrit words i.e. Bhasya===
*Bhasya
*BhAsya Itrans
*Bhaashya or 
*Bhaasya also Itrans
*Bhaasyam
*Bhâsya

As a general rule, I've chosen to follow
#first a non-capitalised version if it sometimes or normally presented that way
#second, in words that are not generally found written in english often, I've chosen to go with Itrans - the capital A.

So, for example
*I've gone with Bhasya and with BhAsyakarAr
*Raja not  rAjA, karma not karmA, jnAna not jnana etc.

===Grammatic and multiple spelling issues=== 
*Advaita Advaitic
*Siva, Saiva, Saivaite
*Vaisnava Vaishnava Vaishnavism Vaishnavaite Vaishnav

Here we have a combination of grammatic usage with difference in
spelling, my choice has been to stick with the one that I've seen
most commonly used.

On the grammatic piece, I've chosen to not hyperlink the ??ic entry but only the main entry i.e. [[advaita]] and advaitic. 

So too for Sannyas and Sannyasi i.e. [[Sannyas] and [[Sannyas]]i. (although this may require separate wiktionary entries)

But it gets a bit tricky with Saivaite, so I've chosen to link it i.e. [[Saivaite]]

I think this is best handled by redirects with the most commonly
