In recent years, National Life Group has taken several big steps to becoming more energy efficient. National Life Group offers a unique Alternate Transportation Program, which encourages its employees to reduce the amount of carbon emissions emitted from the work commute by sponsoring bus routes as a means for employees to get to work. National Life Group also offers incentives to the employees who participate in the program by using a different alternate means of transportation to get to work such as biking, carpooling, taking the bus, walking, or working from home. These incentives include drawings for prizes, bus passes, gas cards, and bike tune-ups.
National Life Group has also implemented several changes at its headquarters in Montpelier, VT in order to increase energy efficiency. In 2008, National Life Group installed the largest concentration of solar panels in the state, consisting of 418 panels that provide over 6000 kilowatts of electricity a month to the building. In addition to the solar array, National Life Group has also constructed several thermal solar panels to absorb the heat from the sun, which is used to cut the cost of hot water for the campus by 50%. A white membrane roof that reflects the sun, as well as a new solar panel project set to be finished in 2015 are some other ways that National Life Group is making an effort to become a more “green”, energy efficient company. Also the headquarters in Vermont features a new state-of-the-art biomass burner that burns wood chips to provide heating for 90% of the building in the winter. National Life Groups commitment to recycling has resulted in a recycling rate of 70% of total waste. This includes paper, cardboard, glass and plastics as well as the ash from the biomass burner which is donated to local farms and used as fertilizer. Also National Life has provided community gardens, which allow employees and community members to plant their own garden.
In 2009, the US Green Building Council gave the National Life Group Headquarters in Vermont a certification of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, for an Existing Building (LEED-EB). This program is nationally recognized and is only achieved through adhering to strict standards based on efficiency, energy usage, and waste production. <ref>"Corporate Social Responsibility."
