His great-grandfather [[Frederick Henry Norman]] was a director of [[Brown, Shipley & Co.]], his grandfather [[Ronald Collet Norman]] was a [[merchant bank|merchant banker]] and [[politician]] who chaired the [[Board of Governors of the BBC]] and the [[London County Council]], his great-uncle [[Montagu Norman|Sir Montagu Norman, the 1st Baron Norman]] was a long-serving [[Governor of the Bank of England]] and his father [[Mark Norman]] was Chairman of the [[merchant bank|merchant bankers]] Lazard Brothers and the cigarette manufacturers [[Gallaher Group|Gallahers]]. Both [[Ronald Collet Norman]] and [[Mark Norman]] became successful administrators with the [[National Trust for Places of Historic Interest or Natural Beauty|National Trust]].

==Family Life==
He married Diana Sheffield (b. 1942) in [[1966]]. His wife is a cousin of Sir Reginald Sheffield, the 8th baronet (father-in-law of the new Tory leader [[David Cameron]]), and second daughter of John Vincent Sheffield.  They have four children:

* 2) Isabella Julia Norman (born [[1971]]) married [[The Honourable]] Timothy Knatchbull ([[1998]]), youngest surviving son of [[Patricia Knatchbull, 2nd Countess Mountbatten of Burma|the Countess Mountbatten of Burma]] and her late husband [[John Knatchbull, 7th Baron Brabourne|the 7th Baron Brabourne]]. Her husband is a grandson maternally of the 1st [[Earl Mountbatten of Burma]], and in remainder to that peerage.  The wedding was attended by members of the British Royal Family, since Lord Mountbatten was maternal uncle to [[HRH The Duke of Edinburgh|Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh]].  They have issue four children. Miss Norman is now The Honourable Mrs Timothy Knatchbull.
* 3) Jonathan Mark Ronald Norman (born [[1972]]) who is married, and has a young daughter, who is notable for being the thirtieth great-grandchild of her [[ageing|nonagenarian]] great-grandfather John Vincent Sheffield CBE (b. 1913), of the Sheffield baronets.
