He played [[college football]] for the [[University of Virginia]]. His contract was waived after preseason in 2006 with the [[San Diego Chargers]] and cut in 2007 with the [[New Orleans Saints]].

Smith was drafted in the sixth round by the Chargers, but was cut, then signed with the Saints in the 2007 offseason to compete with [[John Carney (American football)|John Carney]] before both were released. On July 27, Kurt signed with the [[Seattle Seahawks]]. He was released by the team exactly one month later.
