It is named so because the Department of Mysteries is part of the Ministry of Magic from the fictional novels the board members discuss. It was created when the moderators of an old message board decided to create a newer board that they could maintain better control of.

In 2006, controversy arose when some younger members disagreed with some of the moderating practices the moderators used. It is uncertain what has become of this at this point.
