== About ==
Cancer Institute (WIA) is a [[cancer]] specialty hospital founded by Dr. [[Muthulakshmi Reddy]] in 1954. It is a public charitable and voluntary hospital dedicated to cancer care for past 60 years. It is the Regional Cancer Center in Tamil Nadu consisting of a 535 bed hospital, Research Division, College of oncological sciences and Preventive Oncology division providing state of art cancer therapy. Annually, 15,672 new patients and 140,935 follow-up cases are seen in the Institute.

==Facilities==
The Institute has a hospital, a research center, preventive oncology, and a College of Oncology Sciences (a postgraduate college that conducts super-speciality courses in surgical oncology, medical oncology, oncological nursing, Medical Physics and Psycho-oncology).

Its center for preventive oncology has been working in conjunction with non-government organizations and government hospitals to conduct cancer screening camps and [[Pap smear]] tests at the district level and in various parts of the city.

The Institute's hereditary cancer clinic, the first in the country, is studying the [[genetics|genetic]] factors related to the disease.

The '''''Tobacco Cessation Clinic''''' has been helping people to fight various forms of [[tobacco]] consumption, which is the most common cause of cancer. It is now renamed as Resource Centre for Tobacco Control (RCTC).

The Institute has 535 beds. 40% of the patients are treated totally free and remaining patients pay a nominal amount.

In 2005, Dr. [[V. Shanta]], executive chairman of the Cancer Institute was awarded the [[Ramon Magsaysay Award]]. In 2016, she was awarded the [[Padma Vibhushan]] for her immense contribution in the field of affordable cancer treatment in [[India]].
