The school was founded in [[Newton, Massachusetts]] in 1896 as the Hillbrow School, changing its name in the 1920s when it relocated to Lancaster under the administration of [[child psychologist]] Franklin Haskins Perkins. There are six [[residential area|residential buildings]], each having offices for the presiding [[clinician]], the [[nurse]] and directors. The ratio at the houses is usually 1 staff person to 4 clients.
