Preusser had a classical education at Ludwig-Georgs-Gymnasium in [[Darmstadt]], from where he graduated in 1967<ref name="thesis">"Ein dreidimensionales Rechnungsmodell fuer geodaetischer Punkt- und Geoidbestimmungen." After a short period as trainee with the office of the Senator for Construction and Housing in Berlin, he worked from 1978-1983 in the Computer Center of the Technical University Berlin.
