Karuneegars are mainly concentrated in northern districts of Tamil Nadu, southern districts of Andhra Pradesh, southern districts of Karnataka, Kerala and other states. In Andhra Pradesh, they are called Karnams. They speak Telugu as well as Tamil especially Chittoor region. Typically Menons are Karuneegars of Kerala. They also inhibit various parts of India like Mumbai, Delhi and other states of India. The south Tamil nadu have many Pillai but they are not thought to belong to Karuneegars.
Karuneegars mostly followed Accountancy/Mathematics as their occupation in old times. These days they are in different occupations. Mathematics is natural in their blood.
There are sub-sectors within Karuneegar. They are 1.Seer Karuneegar 2.Sri Karuneegar 3.Sarattu Karuneegar 4.Kaikatti Karuneegar 5.Madhuvazhi Kanakkar 6.Sozhi Kanakkar and 7.Sunnambu Karuneegar
The people who belong to Seer Karuneegar are devotees of Vallalar, a famous Saint who lived in Vadalur. He wrote the famous book Thiru-Arut-pa, which preaches the worship of a divine power in the form of a flame and also teaches self discipline for human beings.
Beliefs:
It is claimed that Karuneegar is a part of Saiva Pillai. Saiva Pillai is a part of big Pillai community. But there are also claims that Karuneegar itself is a separate community of Pillai instead falling under Saiva Pillai. Related by the blood towards "Kayastha and its divisions".
Kayastha is the mother caste of Karuneegar. There are also striking similarities like worship of Chitragupta etc. Both Kayastha and Karuneegar caste believe that they are descendants of Chitragupta. His wife is Karnagi Amman. The history of the Karuneegars are recorded in Karuneegar Puranam. There is a temple for Chitra Gupta in Kanchipuram.
Marriages:
Usually Karuneegars do marriage with Tamil karuneegars and Andhra Karnams. Marriage is not common with other sectors of Kaysthas like Menons, Srivastav, Patnaik, Bose, Shanboug etc..
