McCrea was a linebacker at [[Angelo State University]]. McCrea started four seasons after taking a redshirt his first year on campus.

McCrea went undrafted by the NFL and was signed as a free agent by the [[Corpus Christi Sharks]] of the [[af2]] to play fullback and linebacker in June 2007. He spent a week with the [[Austin Wranglers]] of the AFL prior. McCrea started the last five games of the season and earned Defensive Player of the game twice. McCrea's best performance was against the [[Texas Copperheads]] where he finished with 4 tackles, sack, and a forced fumble for a 40-yard touchdown. During the summer, McCrea worked out for the [[Green Bay Packers]].
