==Early life and education==
Axelrod was born in [[Beverly, Massachusetts]], where he lived until his college years. He earned a [[Bachelor of Arts]] from the [[University of Massachusetts Amherst]] in 1965, a [[Master of Arts]] degree from the [[Johns Hopkins Writing Seminars]] in 1966, an M.F.A. from the [[Iowa Writers' Workshop]] in 1967, and his Ph. D. in not-for-profit program design and administration<ref>http://www.creativehappiness.org/faq/</ref> from the Union Graduate School [[Union Institute]] in 1977.

==Awards and honors==
In honor of his book ANOTHER WAY: Poems Derived from the [[Tao Te Ching]], Axelrod was made a representative of the Wu Dang Temple’s American branch, DaoUSA. From April 2007 through May 2009, he was selected to serve as [[Suffolk County, New York]]'s [[Poet Laureate]].

In the summer of 2009, he received the Hopkins' Society Award for his work with young authors from the [[Gerard Manley Hopkins Society]] at [[Newbridge College]].

He has received three [[Fulbright Award]]s and he is the first Fulbright Award recipient to win back-to-back awards in two separate areas—serving first as Poet-in-Residence in Yugoslavia in 1989, and then Professor of American Literature at the University of Skopia in Macedonia from 1989-1990. He also served as America's representative at the [[Struga Poetry Evenings]] where he was awarded their 1989 poetry prize. He received a third Fulbright Award, as the first official Poet-in-Residence appointed in the People’s Republic of China in 1993.

Axelrod was appointed Volusia County Poet Laureate for the period 2015–2019.<ref name="PEN" />

In 2015 Axelrod won, together with co-authors Lenny Schneir and Carol Thomas, the 2014 Florida Book Award gold medal in the General Nonfiction category, for ''Merlin Stone Remembered''.<ref name="FHC2015p24" /><ref name="FDS2015" />
