"Hanno ucciso l'Uomo Ragno" ("They killed Spider-Man") is a song by the Italian band 883 from their 1992 album of the same name. It was also released as a single the same year. The song hit number 1 on Italian chartboards in 1992. The song is an homage to the Marvel Comics superhero Spider-Man, telling that he has been murdered, and chronicling the evolution of events in New York City starting with the discovery of his death.
Composition and analysis
The song is an example of the pop rock genre, and is structurally divided in three sections, intervalled by the chorus section.
The first section describes a night in the Bronx, as men drink in a bar. All of a sudden, "il Guercio" (a slang term to identify "the Half-blind one" or "the One-eyed one") runs inside with news: rumours are that "the cannons banged".
Then the chorus first plays, saying that Spider-Man has been killed, but no-one knows who killed him, then the song proceeds hypothesising that it was gangsters or publicity, or rather some coffee company to which Spider-Man did some wrong.
The second part reports that, at the Police central, the Commissioner belittles these news, saying that it will not affect the Department's operations and that "crime will not win". Then the song proceeds to state that, however, panic ensues in the streets, and, despite calm messages on television, people avoid to leave their homes and do not "want troubles" anymore.
The third part sings of crime's rise to power in New York City, with people fearing even their friends, knowing that "If I do not sell you, you will sell me,/for 100 lire or little more". Then the narrators proceed again, to sing that now people's heroes are "the faces of Vogue" and "actors too beautiful", while concluding that Spider-Man was a real "star", but he will not return.
The chorus then plays again, first in its standard version, then sang slowed down and with a slight variation, and then again normal.
