A 1979 television series adaptation of Maurice Leblanc's novel was directed by [[Marcel Cravenne]]. It stars [[Claude Jade]] as Véronique d'Hergemont, a female protagonist, who is on the run and on searching for her father and her son, involved in horrible adventures on a terrific island. 

The story proceeds in 1917. Veronique d' Hergemont (Claude Jade) is a 35-year-old nurse at the military hospital of [[Besançon]]. She suddenly learns of the assassination of her husband, the mysterious Count Vorski (Jean-Paul Zehnacker), whom she has not seen for fourteen years. Her research will also lead her on the track of her father and her son whom she believed dead in a shipwreck years earlier. In a silent film she discovers her initials on a street attendant's house: "V d'H". She travels to the location and finds a dead man in the hut with his hand severed and next to him on a piece of paper a prophecy: "Four women on the cross, stone of God, who gives life or death. Thirty sacrifices for thirty coffins". When Véronique arrives on the island of Sarek, the prophecy comes true. She has to watch a murder in rage: Her father dies before her eyes, who curses his grandson. Many people die horrific deaths and Véronique also ends up in a torture chamber. Véronique faces up to the sinister powers.

The character of Arsène Lupine was removed for the film adaptation. In the novel he only appeared at the end to help the heroine Véronique. In the film, the resolution is left to Véronique and the teacher Philippe, who is in love with her. Claude Jade almost didn't get the role because she was considered "too young". Jean Meyer had prophesied to her that a woman would never be as beautiful as she was when she was thirty. The role of Véronique is tempting.
