Chairman of Sirin Foundation, Mr. Visita Leelaratna, initiated the home reading program in Kottegoda Friday May 4th at Goda Uda Maha Vidyalaya. The Venerable Godalwela Rathnananda Nayaka Thero, advisor of Sirin Research Centre, made a special reference to the 29th death anniversary of late Dr. Siripala Leelaratna. Late Dr. Siripala Leelaratna was a well-known educationist who played a vital role in teaching Sinhala in China,. Dr. K. U. Sirinanda gave the key-note speech and asked the students to work hard and make use of the free education to become better citizens of the world., Acting Principal W.S. Alahakoon welcomed the chief guest Visita Leelaratna and everyone attended this special ceremony to remember late Dr. Siripala Leelaratna’s contributions to the world.
 
The event was organized by the Goda Uda Maha Vidyalaya with the sponsorship of the Sirin Research Centre. The Grade two home reading project received Rs. 10,000 to buy reading books. In addition, nine students from Goda Uda Maha Vidyalaya who had participated in art show in Ambalangoda received awards at the ceremony from Dr. and Mrs. Sirinada.

In Visita Leelaratna’s opening remarks the Chairman underscored that it was important for teachers to be aware that students enter Grade two with a wide-range of abilities and that they learn at different paces. He hopes that the students can look forward to a very bright future with home the reading program which offered multi-lingual books in Sinhala, Tamil and English. He also added that the project will enhance social integration in Sri Lanka.

The research project explained to the parents and teachers would understand the value of early learning. Students who read at home more frequently showed grater gains than those who did not.

In order to become better readers, the Grade two students will be asked to practice reading at home each week night. Every student will be signingout books from the classroom library to read for at least 15 minuteseach night at home. 

The parents will be asked to sign a Home Reading log each day, confirming that their child has read to them. The students will sign out books they are familiar with so that they their reading practice will improve theirfluency and comprehension.

Acting Principle Alahakoon concluded by saying that it had been a great privilege and an honour to have been present at the special evening with the Venerable Godalwela Rathnananda Nayaka Thero, Visita Leelaratna, Dr Sirinanda, guests, teachers and students.
