The day of 10th Muharram, 61 Hijrah is remembered to commemorate and mourn the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (as) and his companions at Karbala, Iraq by the muslims and their non-muslim friends all over the world every year. Hazrat Imam Hussain (as) was one of the grandsons of Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh) whom the muslims regard and revere as the last prophet of Allah (God). Hazrat Imam Ali (as), one of the first (paternal) cousins of Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh), was the father of Hazrat Imam Hussain (as). Hazrat Imam Hussain (as) is well known for safeguarding the true doctrines, principles and traditions of Islam as practised by his grandfather with bravery and religious fervour.
