Old High German {{term|wolf|lang=goh}} (German {{term|Wolf|lang=de}}), Old Norse {{term|úlfr|lang=non}} (Swedish {{term|ulv|lang=sv}}), Gothic {{term|𐍅𐌿𐌻𐍆𐍃||tr=wulfs|lang=got}}.  The Indo-European root is also the source of Avestan ''vəhrka-'', Lithuanian {{term|vilkas|lang=lt}}, Old Church Slavonic {{term|влькъ|lang=cu}} (Russian {{term|волк|lang=ru}}).
