Le chanteur Folkfolkloriste [[Alan Lomax]], auteur en [[1941]] du songbook ''[[Our Singing Country]]'', écrit que la mélodie est empruntée à une ballade [[Angleterre|anglaise]] traditionnelle et attribue les paroles à un couple du [[Kentucky]], Georgia Turner et Bert Martin. D'autres auteurs ont proposé différentes filiations, mais celle de Lomax reste généralement considérée comme la plus plausible.
