'''''The House of the Rising Sun''''' est une chanson [[Musique folk|folk]] provenant des [[États-Unis]], dont la version la plus connue a été enregistrée par le groupe [[The Animals]] en 1964.

== Origine ==

Comme pour beaucoup de ballades folk, l'identité de l'auteur de ''The House of the Rising Sun'', appelée aussi ''Rising Sun Blues'', est incertaine. Le chanteur Folk [[Alan Lomax]], auteur en [[1941]] du songbook ''[[Our Singing Country]]'', écrit que la mélodie est empruntée à une ballade [[Angleterre|anglaise]] traditionnelle et attribue les paroles à un couple du [[Kentucky]], Georgia Turner et Bert Martin. D'autres auteurs ont proposé différentes filiations, mais celle de Lomax reste généralement considérée comme la plus plausible.

Au début du {{XXe siècle}}, l'expression ''Rising Sun'' peut avoir été employée comme euphémisme pour un [[Lupanar|bordel]] ou maison de [[prostitution]], et on ne sait pas si cette « maison » décrite dans les paroles est fictive ou non.

== Histoire ==
Le plus vieil enregistrement connu est celui de Tom Clarence Ashley et Gwen Foster, réalisé en [[1934]]. La version de [[Texas Alexander]], intitulée ''The Risin' Sun'', qui fut enregistrée en [[1928]], est souvent proposée comme le premier enregistrement, mais c'est une chanson totalement différente. Ashley disait qu'il l'avait apprise de son grand-père, Enoch Ashley. On remarquera aussi la version de [[Leadbelly]] probablement datée de 1943, intitulée "In New Orleans" et dont les paroles diffèrent légèrement.

[[Dave Van Ronk]], chanteur de jazz et de folk, affirme dans le film ''No Direction Home'' qu'il est à l'origine de la version moderne de la chanson. Il la chante avec Bob Dylan dans des bars folk de New York. Lorsque Bob Dylan réalise son premier album, il se permet de l'enregistrer. Puis l'album fini, il va voir Dave Van Ronk pour lui demander la permission  d'enregistrer ''The House of the Rising Sun'', ce que Dave Van Ronk refusa, souhaitant l'enregistrer lui-même, au grand dam de Dylan. 

Des artistes comme [[Dolly Parton]], [[Tracy Chapman]], [[Nina Simone]], [[Joan Baez]], [[Gregory Isaacs]], [[Brenda Wootton]], [[Woody Guthrie]] ou encore [[Bachman-Turner Overdrive]] l'ont aussi interprétée. ''House of the Rising Sun'' redevint populaire en [[1964]] grâce au groupe rock d'[[Eric Burdon]], ''[[The Animals]]''. Considérant que la chanson traitait à l'origine des lieux de perdition, ''The Animals'' en donnent une version qui est une mise en garde contre le démon de la boisson et du jeu. 

Des versions rock ont été réalisées par divers interprètes, dont la plus connue est celle de {{lien|Frijid Pink}} (un million de disques vendus aux [[États-Unis]]<ref>[http://www.riaa.com/gp/database/search_results.asp RIAA searchable database]</ref>). [[Les Doors]] et [[Led Zeppelin]] n'ont jamais enregistré cette chanson, contrairement à ce qui est parfois avancé.

Le texte varie selon les artistes, notamment dans les versions reggae, comme celles d'[[Alton Ellis]] ou [[Delroy Wilson]] qui ont aussi changé le titre. Récemment, plusieurs interprétations féminines, notamment celle de [[Nina Simone]], ont adopté le point de vue d'une femme qui aurait suivi un alcoolique ou un joueur jusqu'à [[La Nouvelle-Orléans]] et serait devenue prostituée dans la « maison du soleil levant » (the House of the Rising Sun). La chanson a également été interprétée par ''[[Muse (groupe)|Muse]]'', [[Gregory Isaacs]],  [[Sinéad O'Connor]] et de nombreux autres (voir plus bas).

== Les versions ==

En [[1962 en musique|1962]], [[Bob Dylan]] enregistre la chanson sur son premier album ''[[Bob Dylan (album)|Bob Dylan]]''. Dans les commentaires de Stacey Williams insérés dans cet album, la filiation est clairement donnée au chanteur [[Dave Van Ronk]] de qui Bob Dylan l'a apprise. D'autres renseignements précis sur cet épisode de la vie de Bob Dylan sont décrits dans sa biographie (Scaduto : Bob Dylan). Dave Van Ronk explique dans une interview à Scaduto en 1972, avec des propos similaires à ceux qu'il tient dans le documentaire ''[[No Direction Home]]'', qu'il avait l'intention de l'enregistrer à ce moment-là, et que Bob Dylan avait déjà enregistré sa propre version.

La version la plus connue reste celle, électrifiée, de [[1964 en musique|1964]] par le chanteur [[Eric Burdon]] du groupe [[The Animals]], version qui reprend l'arrangement de Dave Van Ronk chanté par Bob Dylan.

En [[1964 en musique|1964]] [[Johnny Hallyday]] chante une version française<ref>l'adaptation française est signée [[Hugues Aufray]] et [[Vline Buggy]]</ref> intitulée ''[[Le pénitencier]]'', (qu'il enregistre également dans une version allemande ''Das Alte Haus in New Orleans'' la même année, puis en [[1982 en musique|1982]] dans une version en espagnol ''El penal'').

Une version [[catalan]]e a été réalisée par le groupe Els Dracs sous le titre ''La casa del sol naixent'', et [[Sinn Sisamouth]] l'a chantée en [[khmer]].

La chanson est reprise en 1982 par le chanteur allemand Gunter Gabriel sous le titre de "Es steht ein haus in west Berlin" dont le disque 45 tour est devenu assez rare. Plus tard, ce même chanteur la reprendra sous le titre de "Es steht ein haus im Kossovo" racontant la guerre dans cette ville. En Allemagne, cette même année, le chanteur d'opéra Peter Hoffman fera une reprise en anglais de la chanson orchestrée par l'orchestre symphonique de Berlin.

Plusieurs artistes jamaïcains ont repris cette chanson arrangée en reggae, mais avec un sens différent. Dans ''Land Call Africa'' (vers 1972), [[Alton Ellis]] chante le retour en Afrique des descendants d'esclaves, un thème cher au mouvement jamaïcain [[Rastafari]]. Notons les versions de [[Delroy Wilson]] sous le titre ''A Place in Africa'' (vers 1975), de Skiddy & Detroit (''The Exile Song'', vers 1976) et [[Gregory Isaacs]] (''House of the Rising Sun', sur l'album ''Pardon me'', 1992) qui l'enregistrant à sa sortie de prison, se rapprocha, lui, de la version des Animals.

En 2006, les premières phrases sont reprises pour le titre ''[[The Saints Are Coming]]'' de [[U2 (groupe)|U2]] et [[Green Day]].

En 2011, [[Hugues Aufray]] donne sa propre version de ''Le pénitencier'', qu'il adapta pour Johnny Hallyday en 1964. Avec le titre ''L'hôtel du soleil levant'', il livre sur le même album ''[[Troubador since 1948]]'', une autre adaptation de ''The House of the Rising Sun'', avec un texte plus proche de la version originale.
