Specifically this template takes the <code>background</code> parameter from {{tl|Infobox musical artist}} or {{tl|Navbox musical artist}} and returns either <code>fn</code> (for individuals) or <code>fn org</code> (for groups), thus:

* solo_singer = fn
* non_vocal_instrumentalist = fn
* non_performing_personnel = fn
* group_or_band = fn org
* cover_band = fn org
* classical_ensemble = fn org
* temporary = fn org
