Svolgono un ruolo fondamentale negli equilibri della natura. Hanno dimensioni grandi e medie e sono di forme slanciate, con ali lunghe, che consentono un volo possente. Sono tipici il loro robusto becco, arcuato, atto a dilaniare le prede, e le zampe altrettanto poderose, armate di robusti artigli e col pollice rivolto posteriormente. Il piumaggio è costituito da un fitto piumino e da penne molto resistenti e rigide.
