Altri contenuti della ''Recherche'' sono individuabili già in un'altra opera di Proust, iniziata a comporre prima, ma pubblicata postuma: ''[[Contro Sainte-Beuve]]''. Proust ne ha iniziato la scrittura nel [[1908]].


Nel febbraio del 1907, pubblica su "le Figaro" un articolo intitolato  Sentimenti filiali di un matricida, in cui analizza due elementi fondamentali della sua futura psicologia: la memoria ed il senso di colpa.

Contemporaneamente si mette a lavorare ad un romanzo, progettando di scrivere parecchi saggi di critica letteraria, artistica e sociologica. Uno di questi saggi dovrà essere consacrato a Sainte-Beuve. A poco a poco tutti questi progetti si fonderanno in uno solo. Durante l'estate del 1909, il saggio "Contro Sainte-Beuve" è diventato un romanzo, che Proust non cesserà di scrivere che alla sua morte. Nel maggio del 1913, adotta come titolo generale "Alla ricerca del tempo perduto".

Sur la lecture – On reading – the preface to Sesame, contains a number of themes which appear later in Swann’s Way, including wonderful observations like this: 
In reading, [Proust writes], friendship is suddenly brought back to its first purity. With books, no amiability. These friends, if we spend an evening with them, it is truly because we desire them. In their case, at least, we leave only with regret. 
During the period 1907-1908 he published various articles in Le Figaro that can be seen as preliminary to material that will eventually be incorporated into his novel. In one of these, “Fillial Sentiments of a Parricide,” – published in February, 1907 – Proust analyzes the phenomenon of memory, which will later figure so prominently in his work. 
Also, at this time, he began what would turn out to be a hybrid work – part essay, part fiction – which is directed against the critical approach of Saint- Beauve, who he faults for failing to understand that a literary work is created by a writer's inner consciousness and is not explainable by the author’s external life. 
"A book," Proust claims, "is the product of a different self than the one we manifest in our habits, in our social life, or in our vices" 
These explorations, not published separately until long after Proust’s death, as Contre Saint-Beauve, will serve Proust as a first version of the Combray section of Swann’s Way; and also of his final volume, Time Regained. Most distinctive in Contre-Saint Beauve is the focus on the being of different kinds of time – inner time, which is experienced through reminiscence and outer time, which can be experienced though awareness of aging appearances, especially those of other people. 
Dans Jean Santeuil, auquel il travaille par intermittence de 1895 à 1899, Proust affronte la réalité : scandales politiques (« affaire Marie »), vie dans les villes de garnison, affaire Dreyfus. Certes, ces épisodes alternent avec des scènes de la vie mondaine et intellectuelle, qui voient le héros fréquenter des écrivains « géniaux », des collectionneurs, des attachés d’ambassade, l’aristocratie la plus prestigieuse, comme dans les rêves snobs de Marcel, comme dans les salons dont on lui entrouvre les portes. Certes, il y a des lilas en fleur, des rêveries, des paons arpentant les pelouses, comme dans Les Plaisirs et les Jours. Certes, il y a le baiser du soir, des aubépines, la lanterne magique, comme, bientôt, dans Du côté de chez Swann.⏎
