ഇംഗ്ലീഷിലെ പേർ '''Night Heron''' എന്നു വീളിക്കുന്നു. മുതിർന്ന പക്ഷികൾക്ക് തല കറുത്തനിറമാണ്. പുറകുവശം ചെമ്പൻ നിറമോ 
ചാരനിറമോ ആണ്. ചെറിയ കഴുത്തും ചെറിയ കാലുകളുമാണുള്ളത്. 

ജലാശയങ്ങളുടെ കരയിൽ മിക്കതും രാത്രികളിൽ പാകത്തിനുള്ള ഇരയെ കിട്ടുന്നതുവരെ അനങ്ങാതെ നിൽക്കും.മൽസ്യങ്ങൾ, ഞണ്ട്, തവളകൾ, മറ്റു ജലജീവികൾ എന്നിവയാണ് ഭക്ഷണം.


==പ്രജനനം== 
മരങ്ങളിൽ ഒറ്റയ്ക്കോ കൂട്ടമായോ  കൂടുകളുണ്ടാക്കുന്നു. ദ്വീപുകളിലോ മുളംകൂട്ടങ്ങളിലോ സുരക്ഷിതമെന്നു തോന്നിയാൽ തറയിലും കൂടുണ്ടാക്കും.
