ജലാശയങ്ങളുടെ കരയിൽ മിക്കതും രാത്രികളിൽ പാകത്തിനുള്ള ഇരയെ കിട്ടുന്നതുവരെ ജലാശയങ്ങളുടെ കരയിൽ ഇവ അനങ്ങാതെ നിൽക്കും.മൽ [[മത്സ്യം|മത്സ്യങ്ങൾ]], ഞണ്ട്, [[തവള|തവളകൾ]], മറ്റു ജലജീവികൾ എന്നിവയാണ് ഭക്ഷണം.

മരങ്ങളിൽ ഒറ്റയ്ക്കോ കൂട്ടമായോ  കൂടുകളുണ്ടാക്കുന്നു. ദ്വീപുകളിലോ മുളംകൂട്ടങ്ങളിലോ സുരക്ഷിതമെന്നു തോന്നിയാൽ തറയിലും കൂടുണ്ടാക്കും.
