2000 ൽ [[ദ ന്യൂ ഇന്ത്യൻ എക്സ്പ്രസ്സ്|ദി ന്യൂ ഇന്ത്യൻ എക്സ്പ്രസിൽ]] സ്റ്റാഫ് റിപ്പോർട്ടറായി പ്രവർത്തനമാരംഭിച്ച ഷാജി, 2006 വരെ അവിടെ തുടർന്നു. ഇതിനിടെ കൽപ്പറ്റ, കണ്ണൂർ, കോഴിക്കോട്, ബാംഗ്ലൂർ എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിൽ ആ പത്രത്തിന്റെ ലേഖകനായി പ്രവർത്തിച്ചു. ഡൽഹിയിലും തിരുവനന്തപുരത്തുമായി [[തെഹൽക|തെഹൽക്ക]] മാസികയിൽ മൂന്ന് വർഷത്തോളം പ്രവർത്തിച്ച ശേഷം ഷാജി ഓപ്പൺ മാഗസിനിൽ
