पुदुचेरीमा चार नजोडिएका साना जिल्लाहरू छन् : [[पुदुचेरी जिल्ला|पुदुचेरी]], [[काराइकाल]] र [[यानाम (भारत)|यानाम]] [[बंगालको खाडिमा]] र [[माहे, भारत|माहे]] [[अरबी सागरमा]] पर्दछन्। पुदुचेरी र कराइकाल एकदमै ठूला जिल्लाहरू हुन् र दुवै [[तामिल नाडु]]को इन्क्लेभ हुन्। यानाम र माहे भने [[आन्ध्र प्रदेश]] र [[केरला]]को इन्क्लेभहरू हुन्छ। यस क्षेत्रको कुल क्षेत्रफल ४९२&nbsp;किमी² जसमा: ''पुदुचेरी (सहर)'' २९३&nbsp;किमी², ''कराइकाल'' १६०&nbsp;किमी², ''माहे'' ९0&nbsp;किमी² र ''यानाम'' ३०&nbsp;किमी² रहेको छ। र आवादी ९००,००० बासिन्दाहरू रहेका छन् (२००१)।

[[पुदुचेरीको इतिहास]] दोस्रो सताब्दि सम्मको रहेको छ।[[Periplus of the Erythraean Sea]]का अनुसार, दोस्रो सताव्दीको पूर्वार्धमा, पोदुकेनामको बजारस्थाल रहेको जनाइएको छ(खण्ड. ६०), जसलाई जि.डब्लु.बी. हन्टिङ्गफर्डले सम्भवत: [[अरिकामेदु]] हुनसक्ने भनेर पहिचान गरेका छन् (अहिले [[अरियानकुपम]]को भागको रूपमा),जुन आधुनिक पुदुचेरी भन्दा २ माइलको दुरीमा रहेको छ। हन्टिङ्गफर्डका अनुसार रोमन कविताहरू अरिकामेदुमा १९३७मा पाइएका थिए,र [[पुरातत्व|पुरातात्विक]] उत्खनन्हरू जुन १९४४ र १९४९को बीचमा गरिएको थियो त्यसले रोमन उत्पादनका वस्तुहरू जुन इस्विको पहिलो सताव्दीको हाराहारीमा यस क्षेत्रमा अयात गरिएको थियो भन्ने पुष्टी गराउँछ।<ref>''The Periplus of the Erythraean Sea'', transl.
