Разработка ''Sonic Adventure'' началась в апреле [[1997 год]]а, после разработки игры ''[[Nights into Dreams…]]''. На создание уровней также вдохновила поездка команды Sonic Team в [[Южная Америка|Южную Америку]].

На момент разработки игры, в уровне, где надо было играть в воздухе на «Торнадо», должен был быть босс «Sky Chase Zone — Dragon Attack»<ref name="agg_meta500" />, с которым надо было вести борьбу в воздухе. К сожалению, босс был вырезан. Позже босса хотели вернуть в ''Sonic Adventure DX: Director’s Cut'', но он также был вырезан.

Этап «Windy Valley» первоначально представлял земную поляну<ref name="agg_meta500" />. Этап предназначался для прохождения Тейлза, Эми, Бига и Гаммы. Порт на PlayStation 3 и Xbox 360 получил низкие отзывы.
