He was the oldest British-born man in [[England]] since [[Claude Choules]].

Dean was born on 4 NovemOctober 1902 in [[Tunstall, Staffordshire|Tunstall]], [[Staffordshire]]. He was married three times, one marriage ended in the wife's death and the other two ended in [[divorce]]. He had one son, Christopher Dean.
