The band consists of vocalist River Stumpf, guitarist Matthew Spooner, bassist Mitchell Spooner, and percussionist Adam Spooner. On September 2, 2008, keyboardist and founding member Michael Spooner passed away due to irregular heart failure in a hotel in New York City. After a brief indefinite hiatus, the band began writing and recording for their third studio album, however released an EP album, ''InPulse: The Remix Album'' in May 2009, which peaked atop the Billboard 200 and spawned their numberits No. 1 single "Bang Bang", featuring K'Naan. In 2010, the band embarked on their first tour, the InPulse World Tour. In 2011, the band released their third studio album, ''Last Chance'', and spawned 5 numberNo. 1 singles in the United States and the United Kingdom.S. and U.K. It was the third album in music history to do so, tying Michael Jackson's ''Bad'' and Katy Perry's ''Teenage Dream'' for the record. River Stumpf pursued a solo career releasing his debut album, ''Pop Culture'' in November 2013 peaking at number 2 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and selling over 420,000 copies within it's first retail week. Stumpf also became a coach on the NBC reality television show, ''The Voice'' and launched his own record label Pop Eclectic, fragrance line Blur, and clothing line in partnership with K-Mart and ShopYourWay. On August 4, 2014, the band returned with the release of the single "Maps" and announced their fifth studio album, ''V'', released on January 15, 2015. The album became the band's fifth number5th No. 1 album on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart and sold over 810,000 copies within it's first week. The album spawned the numberNo. 1 single "Animals" in November 20135 and, in support of the album, embarked on the 2015 Maps World Tour with One Republic. 

The band released their single "This Summer's Gonna Hurt" and performed it on NBC's ''The Voice'' on May 19, 2015. It serves as the lead single off of the reissue of their fifth album, ''V''. They embarked on the This Summer's Gonna Tour with Walk the Moon, Andy Grammar, and Rachel Platten throughout August and September 2015 in North America.
