Recording and production for ''Parallels'' took place between January and June of 2015 in undisclosed studios in Malibu and Los Angeles, California. Most of the writing and pre-production for the album took place whilst the band touring on the Forgetting Everything World Tour in late 2014. Despite having told the media that the band would be going on an indefinite hiatus from touring and recording music together, frontman Matt Flynn spoke about a possibly ninth album with Billboard magazine, saying "I think we have enough material to record three albums worth of music. These songs aren't just me this time. We have been contributing as a band should which feels great." The band concluded their Forgetting Everything World Tour in South America in January 2015 and secretly began recording ''Parallels.''

On November 11, 2015, the band announced that they would be releasing their single, titled "Parallels", along with the announcement of their ninth studio album and its details. On November 13, the band announced that ''Parallels'' would be released through Roadrunner Records on March 4, 2016. On November 16, the band announced a 2016 world tour with X Ambassadors and Awolnation.

The band released their platinum-selling sophomore album ''Oxygen'' and third album ''Last Chance'' through the label before signing with Island Records in 2012. During this time, keyboardist and founding member Michael Spooner passed away and the band recruited musician PJ Morton as a touring member in 2009. The band signed a recording contract with Island Records and released their fourth studio album, ''Lucky Strike'', in 2012. Following their extensive world tour, the band went on an indefinite hiatus in June 2013. In August 2014, the band announced their return to music with a performance at Lollapalooza and their single "Maps", which was followed up by the band's fifth studio album, ''V'', released on January 13, 2015 on Interscope Records. It was announced by Metric, Interscope Records, and the Universal Music Distribution on November 16, 2015 that the band would be releasing the compilation album ''Story'' on February 6, 2016. 

The album was recorded between November 7 and November 15, 2015. The idea behind the album release is to celebrate the band's 10 year anniversary as a group, having it be released on the 10 year anniversary of their commercially success single "Makes Me Wonder", released on February 6, 2006, the lead single off of their self-titled debut studio album. In honor of the anniversary celebration, the album was recorded at Clear Lake Recording Studios in Studio A in Los Angeles, the same location in which their self-titled debut was produced, mixed, and mastered throughout late 2005 and early 2006. Mark "Spike" Stent also executively produced and engineered ''Story'', as he produced and engineered their self-titled debut as well. Mutli-instromentalist Stephen Jordan served a producer and provided additional bass, drums, and percussion during the recording sessions for ''Story'', as he was an influence on the band throughout the recording process of their self-titled debut. 

The promotional single, "Story", was released to digital download on November 19, 2015 accompanied with its lyric video. The video is composed of live footage and photographs of Metric touring over the past decade. 

===Composition===

''Story'' was released through Interscope Records, Polydor Records, and Universal Music Group worldwide on February 6, 2016 in two editions. The standard album is compiled with seven songs, in which were composed and recording in demo form throughout 2005–2006. The songs were re-recorded with Mark Stent and Stephan Jordan serving as producers and music engineers throughout November 2015 at Clear Lake Recording Studios in Studio A in Los Angeles, California. Lyrics for the songs "Miss You, Love You", "Until You're Over Me", and "Losing My Mind" were reworked for the recording process. The standard album also features an eighth track, an acoustic version of "Makes Me Wonder", which was recorded in November 2015 as well. The bonus edition of ''Story'' is compiled of the seven re-recorded songs, the acoustic version of "Makes Me Wonder", eight demo versions of songs from both the ''Story'' tracks and Metric's self-titled debut studio album, and three songs recorded live at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles in 2007. Following the band's extensive worldwide tour in support of their fourth album, ''Lucky Strike'', in 2013, they announced that they would go on an indefinite hiatus from recording, writing, and touring to embark on their individual ventures. Throughout this time, guitarist Matt Spooner became married with actress Leighton Meester and wrote and produced with several recording artists, bassist Mitch Spooner engaged Victoria's Secret model Behati Prinsloo, and percussionist Adam Spooner toured as drummer on Sara Bareilles and Alanis Morissette's respective world tours throughout 2013 and 2014. Rylan Stewart pursued a solo career in music releasing his debut studio album, ''Pop Culture'' in November 2013, which peaked at number 2 on the U.S. Billboard 200. Stewart also acted in the films ''Snitch'' (2013), ''The Purge'' (2013), ''The Nut Job'' (2014), and ''Begin Again'' (2014), and also became a coach and mentor on NBC's reality television show ''The Voice'' (and has been since September 2013). In January 2014, the band performed for the first time in 7 months on CBS's The Night That Changed America: The Beatles special, which aired in February of 2014. After fulfilling their contract with A&M/Octone, Metric departed from the record label and began independently writing and demoing music for a possible fourth studio album in February 2012. According to guitarist Matt Spooner in an interview with Rolling Stone, the band recorded 10 songs between February and March of 2012, however the material has since been scrapped. The 10 unreleased songs have, to date, been dubbed "the outdoor sessions." The reasoning behind the scrapping of the tracks is unofficially known, however has been thought to be because they were recording independently and were seeking a major label deal. In early April 2012, the band entered Conway Studios in Los Angeles, California with record producers Benny Blanco and Shellback whom introduced Metric to rapper Wiz Khalifa. Altogether, the recorded their single "Payphone", featuring the rapper, which was released to contemporary radio on May 8, 2012. "Payphone" peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and became the third best-selling single of the year, following Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" and their own single "One More Night." Throughout May to July of 2012, the band signed a contract with Island Records and recorded material for a fourth album with producers Max Martin, Benny Blanco, Robocop, and Ryan Tedder. In a press release, the band announced that they would release their fourth studio album in "late 2012 or early 2013" and would release their second single "One More Night" on September 18, 2012. The band released "One More Night" commercially and premiered the music video on September 25. Following the success of the EP, the band signed with Fearless and released their fourth studio album ''Closure'' in February 2014, charting at number 64 on the ''Billboard'' 200, spawning the single "Strawberry Swisher Pt. 3", which achieved success on Alternative and Modern rock radio peaking at number 11 on the Alternative Songs chart. The band toured with bands such as Capture the Crown, A Lot Like Birds, Hands Like Houses, Conditions, Structures, and Deadwood in support of of their previous releases. In 2014, the group departed with bassist Derrick Turner the band recorded their fifth studio album, ''Canvases'', which was released on May 5, 2015 and was proceeded by the singles "On the Run", released on February 9 and "We Own the Night" on March 24, 2015.

In 2015, the band served as a supporting act on the Take Action! Tour with headliners Memphis May Fire, Crown the Empire, and Palisades. From June to August, the band toured on the 2015 Van's Warped Tour. The band performed as a musical guest on the ''Late Show With Stephen Colbert'' and ''Saturday Night Live''.
