|ShortSummary=Jacob and the Man in Black are revealed to be twin brothers, stolen from their mother at birth, by a woman who raises them to protect the Island, after her. She shows them the secret lighted power source, in the hidden waterfall cave at the heart of the Island. The 2 brothers (with blond and black hair) grow to opposing views (as white versus black): Jacob follows his adoptive mother, but his brother moves to live with others on the Island. The brother reveals a plan to leave the Island, and his mother hits him with a stone and destroys the villagers. She then chooses Jacob to drink the water of immortality. His brother awakens to find the villagers dead, and in revenge, kills their mother. When Jacob finds her dead, he throws his brother into the waterfall cave, which transforms the Man in Black into the Smoke Monster.
