The name was briefly changed to the ''Commissioner's Trophy''. In 2002, the award was renamed ''The Ted Williams Most Valuable Player Award'' in honor of former [[Red Sox]] player [[Ted Williams]], who had died earlier that year. Because the game ended in a tie, no winner was named that year, making the [[Anaheim Angels]]' [[Garret Anderson]] the first recipient of the Ted Williams Award in 2003.
