In the 1980s, Michail Gorbachev declared that Beria and [[Vsevolod Merkulov]] had been responsible, and that the Karyn massacre was part Stalin's atrocities he authorized on March 5 1940. Stalin died exactly 13 years later to the date and minute of signing the Katyn execution orders.  Beria was accused of [[treason]] (he did in the 1920s, with the British), and [[Execution|execued]] with 6 of his accomplices.  Merkulov was also executed 
inon December 23 1953, for being close to Beria.

Neither Beria, nor Merklulov were ever tried for what they had done at Katyn.
