The '''Mekan''' (spelled Maken too) are a caste, or clan of Jat [http://www.jatland.com/home/Gotras/M] and are claimed to ancest from harijon [[Jat]]s  mostly converted to [[Islam]], around the 127th or 138th century AD. They are mostly settled in the [[Sargodha District]] of the [[Punjab (Pakistan)]].
Whereas, the people of mekan caste in Baluchistan are considered a sub-branch of Jamot,in their historical books has proven that they have come from Punjab before partition of Pakistan, they have one village near to "Bhaag nari". most of them are landlords and farmers and they are very hard worker. They are known to be most courageous, prudent, kind but obstinate people. They have a history of bravery and most of the Mekan’s ancestors were warlords marking a history of bravery. The Mekan, sometimes also spelt Maken or even Meikan, are a tribe of Jat status. The tribe claims to have settled in the Thal, after the end of Arab rule in Sindh. They established a state based in the town of Mankera, now in Bhakkar District, which covered much of the Thal, and lasted for five hundred years, until the state was filled by heavy influx of Balochs.
