This was followed from 1909 to 1912 by years of study at the [[Kunstakademie Düsseldorf]] and from 1910 to 1914 with the history and church painter [[Heinrich Nüttgens]] (1866–1951). With him, he learnt the techniques of [[stained glass]] and [[mural]].
