== Privateersonal life ==
Eduard Bechteler was born in Munich in 1890 as the son of Theodor Bechteler. After his birth, his father moved back to his hometown [[Immenstadt]]. His younger brother [[Theo Bechteler]] also pursued an artistic career.

Bechteler learned [[woodturning]] from his father, but painted avidly in his free time. He exhibited his first paintings in his parents' business from 1912 and the following years.

During a stay in Paris, he met the [[Sculpture|sculptress]] Ruth Zachrisson, married her and moved with her to Sweden in 1933. There, at the river [[Ångerman]] and [[rapids]] Nämforsen in [[Ådals-Liden]], he built a [[studio]] house of his own design, the Villa Edelweiß, which he extended in 1936 into a permanent [[art gallery]] that was well attended.<ref> Horst Ludwig (ed. ), Münchner Maler des 19./20. After the death of his wife in 1949, he was married to Eva Hildegard Hornemann from 1953-1957 and then returned to Germany in 1975 after meeting his third wife, Marianne Geiger from Türkheim, on [[Capri]].

Bechteler died in Mindelheim at the age of 93.

== Artistic career ==
Bechteler was admitted to the [[Academy of Fine Arts, Munich]] in 1920. He became a pupil of [[Peter von Halm]], [[Max Doerner]], [[Angelo Jank]] and Wilhelm von Zügel. From 1923 onwards, he painted Allgäu [[landscape]]s, [[motif]]s from Holland and the [[Baltic Sea]]. He also created [[commemorative plaque]]s and [[memorial]] stones for the town of Immenstadt and fountains for [[Sonthofen]]. However, he painted his best pictures in Sweden - [[landscape]]s, people and animals. He also created animal sculptures.
