Shabanova was a student of [[Pimenov, Yuri Ivanovich|Yuri Pimenov]] and she developed artistic research works with with [[Sergei Parajanov]] and [[Andrei Tarkovsky]]. She was inspired both by an interest in Russian folk art, and by [[modernism]] in art. The 1983 film [[Nostalghia]] by Andrei Tarkovsky was inspired by the [[Magic realism]] of Galina Shabanova.
