Revision 4199745 of "Lens" on simplewiki
A lens is a piece of glass or clear (transparent) plastic that changes the way things look. They may appear larger, smaller, or inverted. Some places lenses are used include spectacles (glasses), contact lenses, cameras, projectors, microscopes, telescopes, magnifying glasses, etc. Eyes are also considered lenses.
They work by refraction, or the bending of light.
Lenses found in glasses, have three main shapes. Each different shape, manipulates the image slightly (making it bigger or smaller). The three types are as follows:
Convex: bulges outwards from the lens.
Concave: depressed into the lens.
Planar: flat

First references about lenses were in the ancient Greek piece of Aristofan "Clouds", where with lenses and sun's light made a fire.
