Born and raised in Burnsville, Minnesota, he grew up in a musical family and was heavily influenced by music his parents listened starting a fairly young age. Participating in several musical competitions, school plays, and being involved in his local musical community, he was recognized in 2005 for his talent by Mike Elizando at a festival in Minneapolis where he was singing with his cousins on stage. he is the co-founder and lead vocalist for the pop rock group River Stumpf and the Spooner Brothers, in which got signed to Octone Records by Jimmy Iovine and released their debut studio album in May 2006. Ultimately signed to Interscope Records, Stumpf has sold 97 million album and single units worldwide with his band and as a solo musician has sold over 2 millions album units. He has been rewarded the Presidential Songwriters Award at the 2014 BMI Awards and was recognized for his footprint in popular culture by Rolling Stone, The Hollywood Reporter, Billboard, and TIME Magazine and has been prominently known as one of the best-selling musicians in history.
As a musician, Stumpf has released 5 studio albums with his band since 2006: ''River Stumpf and the Spooner Brothers'' (2006), ''Oxygen'' (2008), ''Last Chance'' (2011), ''Lucky Strike'' (2012), and ''V'' (2015), in which have all achieved multi-platinum success internationally. On February 21, 2015, he revealed in an interview with Billboard that he will be releasing a solo studio album sometime before year's end. On March 3, it was rumored that Zayn Malik was writing and recording with Stumpf for his ''Pop Culture'' follow-up following an Instagram post of the two in the studio. On March 30, Taio Cruz stated in an interview with a French radio station that he is writing with Stumpf in late April. On March 31, 2015, a teaser of a new solo song, titled "By the End Of the Night" was featured an ad for Stumpf's latest fragrance, Blur, however there are no plans for the song to be released as single yet.

On April 1, 2014, he announced that he would be launching his own business and record label entitled Pop Eclectic on June 1, 2014. After rumors began of reggae pop band MAGIC! were signing to the label in early May, it was denied, however it was announced that Nico & Vinz, Christina Grimmie, Rozzi Crane, and Cody Simpson were signed to the label. In August of 2014, his band River Stumpf and the Spooner Brothers signed a distribution with Interscope and Pop Eclectic. On March 31, 2015, it was announced that Sweden electronic music duo Max Elto were signed to the label. Stumpf's second studio album is set to be released through Pop Eclectic in late 2015.

Following extensive touring in support of the band's fourth studio album, ''Closure'' (2014), the band entered Cargo Studios in San Jose, California in early October to begin recording for their fifth studio album. In early November, the band finished recording their new material. In an interview with Alternative Press, guitarist Jonathan Evans confirmed that the band wrote and recorded over 35 songs for the album and cut it down to 14 possible tracks, only being allowed to publish 12 tracks on the album's final mastering session. Mix and mastered by Justin Meldal-Johnsen, the album was finalized by Fearless Records on February 9, 2015 and was announced to be released on May 5, 2015 titled ''Canvases.'' The lead single, "On the Run" was released on February 10, 2015 and peaked at number 10 on the U.S. Billboard Alternative Songs chart, becoming their first top 10 on the chart. Previously, "Strawberry Swisher Pt. 3" was the band's highest-charting single on the chart peaking at number 13. A music video for "On the Run" premiered via Vevo and Universal Music Group on March 23, 2015, becoming the first band on the Fearless Records roster the have a contract in partnership with Vevo and UMG. Following extensive touring in support of the band's debut album, ''Draw My Thoughts'' (2012), the band began writing for their second album throughout the summer of 2013 on the Van's Warped Tour. The band began recording and production for the album in February 2014 with producer Cameron Mizell at Chango Studios in Orlando, Florida. Initially, the band recorded 10 songs with Mizell and planned on releasing their second album sometime in the fall of 2014. However, plans changed after the band toured as supporting acts on the Monumentour with Fall Out Boy and Paramore and the album was pushed back to a possible late 2014 release. In September and October 2014, it was reported that the band began recording more material for their second album in Glendale, Arizona, but this time around, with producers Justin Meldal-Johnsen (Paramore, Young the Giant, The Reveonattes) and David Bendeth (Papa Roach, Killswitch Engage, Underoath). The band finished recording for the album in early October and confirmed that the album was set to be released sometime in early 2015. In December 2014, it was confirmed that the album's title would be ''Life After All'' and would be released in March of 2015 on Epic Records. After announcing their Life After All North American Tour in early January, the band revealed that the album would be released in the summer of 2015.
In support of ''Life After All'', the band embarked on the Life After All North American Tour in March and concluded in June 2015 with Sleeping With Sirens, As it Is, and Slaves. It was announced on April 6, 2015, that the band would be performing on the main stage at the 2015 Van's Warped Tour. In September 2015, the band is set to embark on the European leg of their Life After All World Tour with supporting act Dance Gavin Dance.
