===Background===

Throughout the first musical hiatus of River Stumpf and the Spooner Brothers, which took place between June 2013 and August 2014, lead vocalist River Stumpf began writing and recording his own material to release his debut studio album as a solo musician. On November 25, 2013, he released the album ''Pop Culture'' to positive critical acclaim. His singles "Penelope" and "Dear John", featuring Lorde, achieved commercial and chart success in the United States and the United Kingdom, each peaking in the top-ten on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and the Official U.K. Singles chart. In support of ''Pop Culture'', he embarked on two different tours. During late November to December of 2013, he embarked on the 7 date Pop Roadies Tour, which took place in 7 cities in the United States and Canada with different supporting acts each date. He embarked on the Lip Service World Tour from February to May of 2014 with supporting acts Capitol Cities, Lorde, and Christina Grimmie on selected dates in North America and Europe.

River Stumpf and the Spooner Brothers announced the end of their indefinite hiatus in early August 2014. The band released their fifth studio album ''V'' on January 13, 2015 through Interscope Records. After touring in support of the album from February to October of 2015, Stumpf hinted at new solo material being release. On February 15, 2015, he published an ad for his debut fragrance line, titled ''Blur'', which featured a new song later confirmed to be titled "By the End of the Night." In an interview with Billboard magazine in June of 2015, he announced that the album would be titled ''Night By Night'' and that he was working with Martin Solveig on numerous tracks earlier in the year for his plausible forthcoming second solo studio album. In September 2015, it was confirmed that Stumpf had worked with recording artists Zayn Malik, formerly of One Direction, Ariana Grande, and Dragonette for his sophomore album. On October 2, Stumpf published on Twitter confirming that he will be releasing solo material this month.

On October 9, 2015, Stumpf released his single "By the End of the Night" as the lead single off of ''Night By Night.'' The single debuted at No. 14 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart and peaked at No. 2 on the Digital Songs chart upon its release. A music video for the single was uploaded to YouTube and Vevo on October 14, 2015. To promote the album, he performed on ''The Late Show With Stephen Colbert'' and on ''Jimmy Kimmel Live''. In a similar media promotion strategy that took place during Stumpf's last solo album release, he released 3 digital promotional singles starting with "All We Get" released on November 6 followed by "Drive" released on November 13, and "511's" released on November 19, 2015. The album was released on November 26, 2015, approximately two years following the release of his debut studio album ''Pop Culture''.

The second single, "We Own the Night", was released on April 7, 2015. The third single, "Shark Dad", was released on July 3. Upon the album's release, it charted at No. 18 on the U.S. Billboard 200 Albums chart, No. 15 on the Canadian Albums chart, and at No. 55 on the U.K. Albums chart.

The album was highly praised for its diverse sound including the pop and rock subgenres blue-eyed soul, post-hardcore, screamo, and experimental and progressive rock.

===Background===

After limited touring in support of their debut major label studio album, ''Closure'' (2014), the band entered Lakeland Studios in Burnsville, Minnesota and recorded 7 songs with producer Kris Crummett in a matter of 10 days in early December 2014. In late January of 2015, the band entered Conway Recording Studios in Georgia, Florida with Crummett to record another 7 songs in a time period of 4 weeks going into February. In part of Fearless Records, the second half of the album's recording sessions were completely paid for and thus resulted in less stress for the band during the recording process.

News of the album first sprung on February 9, 2015 when the band published a post on Facebook confirming that they were not breaking up, following rumors that the band would split up in 2014, and that they would be releasing a new album with Fearless Records during the Spring of 2015. They released their single "On the Run", accompanied with its lyric video on February 17, 2015. The song later achieved success on the U.S. Billboard Alternative Songs chart, peaking at No. 9. A music video for "On the Run" was uploaded to their Vevo account on February 27, 2015. On March 16 and 17, it was confirmed that the band was shooting a music video for a yet-to-be-releasing single in Los Angeles California. The single "We Own the Night" was released on April 7, 2015 along with its music video. The single peaked at No. 11 on the Alternative Songs chart and also charted at No. 3 on Billboard's Twitter Real-Time chart. The same day, the band announced their second album's title, release date, and album art cover.

''Canvases'' was released in the United States on May 5, 2015 through Fearless Records. It debuted and peaked at No. 18 on the U.S. ''Billboard'' 200 Albums chart, No. 4 on the Billboard Hard Rock Albums chart, and at No. 3 on the Alternative Albums chart. Following the album's release, the band released their third single "Shark Dad" on July 3, 2015 with its music video. On August 13, 2015, the band released their music video for the song "Awkward." On September 10, 2015, the band premiered their music video for "The Cuddler" through Alternative Press. On the album's notes, the song "Death to the Strawberry Swisher" was aptly titled "Death of a Strawberry" in the album's psychical copies in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, however was titled "Strawberry Swisher, Pt. 4" in Australian copies.

In support of the album, the band performed on the 2015 Vans Warped Tour on the Shark Stage. From October 23 to November 27, 2015, the band toured as a supporting act on Hands Like Houses' Dissonants Tour with Lower Than Atlantis, Brigades, and Too Close to Touch.
