'''''Metric''''' is an American pop rock band originated in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Born and raised in Burnsville, brothers Matthew, Mitchell, Adam, and Michael began writing and recording music in 2002. After recruiting cousin and vocalist Rylan Stewart at age 12, the band became signed with A&M/Octone Records, recording and releasing their self-titled debut studio album, ''Metric'', in May 2006 becoming a worldwide success spawning 2 number-one mutli-platinum singles "Makes Me Wonder" and "Wake Up Call" the same year. The band released their platinum-selling sophomore album ''Oxygen'' and third album ''Last Chance'' through the label before signing with Island Records in 2012. During this time, keyboardist and founding member Michael Spooner passed away and the band recruited musician PJ Morton as a touring member in 2009. The band signed a recording contract with Island Records and released their fourth studio album, ''Lucky Strike'', in 2012. Following their extensive world tour, the band went on an indefinite hiatus in June 2013. In August 2014, the band announced their return to music with a performance at Lollapalooza and their single "Maps", which was followed up by the band's fifth studio album, ''V'', released on January 13, 2015 on Interscope Records. In 2015, the band released their single "This Summer's Gonna Hurt" and embarked on their North American This Summer's Gonna Hurt Tour in support of the reissue of ''V''.
Metric has sold more than 35 millions digital and physical singles and albums worldwide becoming known as one of the best-selling music groups of all time. According to Neilson, the band is the only music group to establish scoring 5 or more number-one studio albums since their debut album in North America.

'''''V''''' is the fifth studio album by American pop rock band Metric released on January 13, 2015 through Interscope Records and Pop Eclectic in the United States and Canada. The albums follows-up the band's fourth studio album, ''Lucky Strike'' (2013), and is the first release since their departure with Island Records in 2013. The album was produced by Johan Carlsson, Jason Evigan, The Monsters and the Strangerz, Ryaln Stewart, and Noel Zancanella while Matthew Spooner and Ryan Tedder served as executive producers. The album was recorded throughout the months of June and July 2014 in Excelsior, Minnesota and was produced and mixed in August and September in Los Angeles, California. The lead single, "Maps", was released on August 4, 2014 and peaked at number 3 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. The second single, "Animals", was released on September 29 and topped the Billboard Hot 100 and became a worldwide commercial success in late-2014 with its controversial music video, directed by Samuel Bayer, which premiered on October 4, 2014. "Unkiss Me" was released the album's third commercial single on January 20, 2015 and peaked at number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100. The fourth single from the album, "Sugar", was released on April 7 and peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became famously known for its music video, shot and directed by Mark Burnett and David Dobkin. After ''V'' was released as a reissue in the U.S. and U.K. on June 2, 2015, the band released "This Summer's Gonna Hurt" as a single on the same day, accompanied with its music video peaking at number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topping the Official U.K. Singles chart, becoming the band's first U.K. number-one single their single "Moves Like Jagger" in 2012.
''V'' debuted and peaked at number-one on the U.S. Billboard 200 Albums chart, selling 840,000 copies within its first week in retail, becoming the band's best-selling sale for an album in its first week since ''Lucky Strike'' in 2012, which sold 680,000 copies.
===Background===
Following the band's extensive worldwide tour in support of their fourth album, ''Lucky Strike'', in 2013, they announced that they would go on an indefinite hiatus from recording, writing, and touring to embark on their individual ventures. Throughout this time, guitarist Matt Spooner became married with actress Leighton Meester and wrote and produced with several recording artists, bassist Mitch Spooner engaged Victoria's Secret model Behati Prinsloo, and percussionist Adam Spooner toured as drummer on Sara Bareilles and Alanis Morissette's respective world tours throughout 2013 and 2014. Rylan Stewart pursued a solo career in music releasing his debut studio album, ''Pop Culture'' in November 2013, which peaked at number 2 on the U.S. Billboard 200. Stewart also acted in the films ''Snitch'' (2013), ''The Purge'' (2013), ''The Nut Job'' (2014), and ''Begin Again'' (2014), and also became a coach and mentor on NBC's reality television show ''The Voice'' (and has been since September 2013). In January 2014, the band performed for the first time in 7 months on CBS's The Night That Changed America: The Beatles special, which aired in February of 2014. In May 2014, the band performed at Wango Tango in Los Angeles becoming their first full performance in nearly a year.
In early June, the band began writing and recording for their fifth studio album on a cabin on Lake Minnetonka in Excelsior, Minnesota, recording 6 songs. The band travelled to Los Angeles, California and recorded 7 more songs at Conway Recording Studios from early August to early September. On August 2, 2014, the band performed a full-length concert at Lollapalooza and debuted their single "Maps." The single was later released for digital download and to contemporary radio worldwide on August 4. The music video for "Maps" premiered on September 2, 2014 on MTV, which was directed by Peter Berg. "Maps" peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the U.S. Mainstream Top 40 and Adult Pop Songs charts. On September 21, the band posted an unexplainable countdown on their official website which counted down to September 29 at 10:00a.m. EST. On September 29, the band released their single "Animals" and announced that they were releasing their album ''V'' on January 13, 2015 through Interscope Records. The music video for "Animals" premiered on YouTube and Vevo on October 4 and sparked controversy due to its graphic nature of blood and gore and critics claiming it "glorified sexual abuse, the nature of stalking, and rape." "Animals" eventually topped the Billboard Hot 100 single chart, becoming the band's 13th No. 1 single in the United States. The band released two more commercial single, "Unkiss Me" and "Sugar", in 2015 following the album's release, each respectively peaking at numbers 9 and 2 on the Hot 100 chart.
On June 2, 2015, the band released a re-issue of their album ''V'' along with the release of their single "This Summer's Gonna Hurt." The single was accompanied with its music video and peaked at number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
===Tour===
In support of the ''V'', the band announced their Maps World Tour on October 4, 2014. The tour included stops in North America, South America, Asia, and Australia and took place from February to late April 2015. One Republic served as the main supporting act on the entirety of the tour.

===Background===
After fulfilling their contract with A&M/Octone, Metric departed from the record label and began independently writing and demoing music for a possible fourth studio album in February 2012. According to guitarist Matt Spooner in an interview with Rolling Stone, the band recorded 10 songs between February and March of 2012, however the material has since been scrapped. The 10 unreleased songs have, to date, been dubbed "the outdoor sessions." The reasoning behind the scrapping of the tracks is unofficially known, however has been thought to be because they were recording independently and were seeking a major label deal. In early April 2012, the band entered Conway Studios in Los Angeles, California with record producers Benny Blanco and Shellback whom introduced Metric to rapper Wiz Khalifa. Altogether, the recorded their single "Payphone", featuring the rapper, which was released to contemporary radio on May 8, 2012. "Payphone" peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and became the third best-selling single of the year, following Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" and their own single "One More Night." Throughout May to July of 2012, the band signed a contract with Island Records and recorded material for a fourth album with producers Max Martin, Benny Blanco, Robocop, and Ryan Tedder. In a press release, the band announced that they would release their fourth studio album in "late 2012 or early 2013" and would release their second single "One More Night" on September 18, 2012. The band released "One More Night" commercially and premiered the music video on September 25. The single became the band's 12th number-one Billboard Hot 100 single in October 2012 charting atop the chart for 8 weeks; one week short to Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" (with 9 weeks atop the Hot 100), which was the longest running number-one single in the U.S. in 2012.
In October 2012, the band announced their Overexposed World Tour which took place from February to June of 2013 with Bruno Mars, Neon Trees, and Owl City as supporting acts, along with AWOLNATION on selected dates. On October 12, the band teased a clip of them in the studio recording the song "Doin' Dirt" on Rolling Stone's official website.
The band published ''Lucky Strike'' on December 16 on their official YouTube and Vevo channels and was later released psychically and digitally on December 18, 2012 worldwide through Island Records. It sold 680,000 copies within its first week in the United States becoming the band's fourth number-one album. The album's title-track, "Lucky Strike", was released as the third commercial single on January 13, 2013 and peaked at number 10 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. The music video for the single premiered through Yahoo! Music on February 14, 2013. On April 23, 2013, the band released "Wipe Your Eyes" featuring Justin Bieber as the album's fourth and final commercial single which eventually peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.
