Why are People Lactose Intolerant?
Lactose intolerance is the failure to digest a type of sugar found in milk. The sugar is called lactose, which causes problems like bloating, cramps, and diarrhea for some people. The reason for this is because there are not enough lactase enzymes released by the small intestine that can break down lactose into more basic forms, like glucose and galactose.
WHO HAS LACTOSE INTOLERANCE?
Although infants and young kids have lactase enzymes, its activity is greatly reduced after breastfeeding since they no do not need lactose anymore. In fact, it is said to be a “genetically programmed event” since lactase is an enzyme only used to digest lactose in milk and is no longer converted from gene to protein as people age. About three-fourths of the human population is lactose intolerant. Therefore, it is not unusual that many people are lactose intolerant since humans are the only species to drink milk from another species.
