Benton graduated from University of Utah with a degree in Economics and Film with an emphasis on Screenwriting.<ref>{{cite web |title=(33) Edwin Benton {{!}} Athletics |url=https://collections.lib.utah.edu/details?id=770818 |website=collections.lib.utah.edu |accessdate=4 October 2018 |language=en}}</ref> In 2004, Benton produced directed the comedy pilot ''Agenda: The Breakroom Bandit'', which featured Kareem Grimes, Dino Archie, and Garrett Kirby. Subsequently, he was hired to film behind the scenes footage for Def Jam music artists such as Chrisette Michele and Johnta Austin. In 2012, he founded ''Shine Residential'', a health care agency known for servicing adults with intellectual disabilities.
