Galya Shabanova was a student of [[Pimenov, Yuri Ivanovich|Yuri Pimenov]] and was friends with Sergei Parajanov and Andrei Tarkovsky. The 1983 film Nostalgia by Andrei Tarkovsky was inspired by the magical realism of Galina Shabanova.
