Galya Shabanova was a student of [[Pimenov, Yuri Ivanovich|Yuri Pimenov]] and was friends with [[Sergei Parajanov]] and [[Andrei Tarkovsky]]. The 1983 film [[Nostalghia]] by Andrei Tarkovsky was inspired by the magical realism of Galina Shabanova.
